Flocculant
Shop Emergency Recovery Pool Flocculants and Water Clearers
When your pool looks more like a muddy lagoon or a bowl of pea soup than an oasis, standard filtration won't cut it. Whether you’ve just weathered a brutal Henderson dust storm or your pool turned green overnight somewhere else in the country, you need a high-performance pool flocculant. Often called "Floc," this chemical is the ultimate emergency button for severe cloudiness, designed to settle suspended debris to the floor so you can reclaim your water in record time.
At Fresh Pool Supply, we know that when you are looking to buy pool floc, you’re usually in the middle of a pool emergency. Our goal is to help you clear cloudy pool water fast, safely, and effectively.
While Floc is incredibly powerful, it’s also the most misunderstood chemical in the shed. Use it right, and your pool is clear in 24 hours; use it wrong, and you could be looking at an expensive filter replacement.
Pool Flocculant vs. Clarifier: Which Do You Need?
The most common mistake pool owners make is using these terms interchangeably. While both result in clear water, the process for each is very different:
|
Feature |
Clarifier (The Helper) |
Flocculant (The Heavy Hitter) |
|
The Science |
A coagulant that bunches tiny particles together so the filter can catch them. |
A magnet that binds debris into heavy clumps that sink to the floor. |
|
Removal Method |
Your pool filter does the work during normal circulation. |
You must manually vacuum to waste (bypassing the filter). |
|
Best Used For |
Mild haze, dull water, or routine weekly maintenance. |
Pea soup algae, heavy silt after storms, or when you can't see the floor. |
|
Effort Level |
Low: Add to water and let the pump run. |
High: Requires pump management and manual vacuuming. |
The Step-by-Step Guide to a Storm Recovery
If you’re dealing with a Henderson pool storm cleanup or a post-flood swamp in the Midwest, the recovery process is the same. Follow this expert protocol to ensure your pool flocculant works the first time:
-
Balance Your Water: Floc is picky. It usually only works if your pH is between 7.2 and 7.8. Before you start, check your levels and use water balancers to hit that sweet spot.
-
Add the Floc: Set your pump to recirculate (bypassing the filter). Add the recommended dose of liquid or powder floc directly to the water.
-
Circulate: Run the pump for 2–4 hours to ensure the chemical is fully distributed throughout the pool.
-
The Big Sleep: Turn the pump OFF for 12–24 hours. The water must be perfectly still for the bound debris to settle into a thick, visible layer on the pool floor.
-
Vacuum to Waste: Once the debris has settled, use a manual pool vacuum set to "Vacuum to Waste." This sends the gunk directly out of the pool; do not run this through your filter, or you will clog it instantly.

Essential Warning: Don't Ruin Your Filter
This is the most important technical tip we can give: Never let flocculant pass through a cartridge or DE filter.
Floc is designed to make things stick together. If that sticky water hits your cartridge filter, it will glue the fibers together, rendering the element useless. If you have a cartridge filter system and don't have a bypass or waste plumbing setup, you must proceed with extreme caution.
If you've accidentally gunked up your system, don't panic; we stock a full range of replacement cartridge filters to get you back in business.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I use floc with a cartridge filter?
You can use floc with a cartridge filter only if your plumbing allows for recirculation or bypassing the filter entirely. If Floc enters a cartridge filter, it will glue the pleats together, making the element inoperable. If you can't bypass the filter, use a clarifier instead.
2. How long does it take for floc to work?
After the initial two-hour circulation, the water needs to sit completely still for 8 to 24 hours. Any pump activity or swimming during this window will stir up the particles, preventing them from settling into a vacuumable layer on the floor.
3. Why doesn’t the debris sink to the bottom?
The most common cause of debris not sinking to the bottom of the pool is improper pH levels. Floc requires a range of 7.2 to 7.8 to activate, or it may fail to leave the pump off long enough. If the debris remains suspended, rebalance your water chemistry and try the settling process again.
4. Is floc safe for saltwater pools?
Floc is absolutely safe for saltwater pools. Professional-grade flocculants are safe for all pool finishes, including plaster, vinyl, and fiberglass. They will not damage your saltwater chlorine generator cell, provided you follow the recirculate instructions to keep the sticky debris out of your filter system.
5. What is the fastest way to clear a green pool?
We call it the Kill and Chill method: Shock the water heavily to kill the algae, then add flocculant to settle the dead gray algae to the floor. Finally, vacuum the waste directly out of the pool to bypass the filter entirely.
